If what they say is true, this little bit of technology could save 25% of the energy we consume in the world today.

Re: Pretty cool info
Mon, December 18, 2006 - 6:42 AMThe link given is to a very poorly designed web site with almost no information. It finally leads to another link:
news.independent.co.uk/busine...541.ece
But this is one of those business blurbs with almost no technical info. I wonder if this is something real or just hype. -

Re: Pretty cool info
Mon, December 18, 2006 - 6:59 AMI have checked my sources and the company looks legitimate. If it their tech is solid it could lead to some pretty major energy savings in the world.
I'm sorry you don't like my website. Do you have any suggestions on how I could make it better?

Re: Pretty cool info
Mon, December 18, 2006 - 8:12 AMOK but I don't have the faintest idea what they are doing other than it has something to do with copper.
Sorry, didn't know it was your web site. Between two pairs of ads, I see the following:
_____________________________
home > news >
0th
Source:
____________________________
And that's it. What it means I don't know but it presents nothing comprehensible.
If it pretends to be the opening page of an informative web site, then I suspect that you've used a page editing program that only displays correctly if the viewer is using a certain specific operating system or browser, a trick often used by Microsoft. Have your web site checked out by someone using Opera and Firefox, and in Mac and Linux. Don't consider your site to be done until it works well on all systems. Good luck on your efforts! -

Re: Pretty cool info
Mon, December 18, 2006 - 11:31 PMI see the problem. Tribe is trucating the url. It should be www.nanotech-now.com/news.cgi
If that didn't go through then you can cut and paste:
www.nanotech-now.com/news.cgi
?story_id=19184
You found the link for the page we refer people to from our site. I try to post all the nanotech news I can find each day through sources we've developed over the last 5 years of doing this site. We can only put about 20% of the article on or site because of copywrite laws so we list a brief abstract then send them to the orginal news story.
What I understand about the article is they have developed a technology using nanotech to increase the conductivity of copper by a factor of 40 which will result in heating and air conditioning units will use half the power they are now using. Could make a big difference out there in total energy consumption when 50% of the worlds energy usage goes to heating and a/c. -

Re: Pretty cool info
Tue, December 19, 2006 - 5:30 AMThat certainly is an improvement, Brian! And, by the way, now your page looks darn good. The only suggestion I can make is to try to mainly put in real technology news. There are sites that put up news like "Mr. John Smith just took over as Vice President of production of Huff 'n Puff Wind Generator Company" and call it technology news. It isn't.
As for the nanotech used to improve copper conductivity, I have some doubts about the figures thay give but that's no reflection on your reporting. Good work.

Re: Pretty cool info
Tue, December 19, 2006 - 8:21 AMThanks for the feedback, Roy. I do filter out all the MLM stuff and anything that looks like BS. I do let in a variety of info, though because people new to the science need some human interest stuff to get their attention and introduce them the the possibilities. I feel like this tech will be bringing a lot of changes in the world and the more people involved in the process and contributing to decisions being made the better. I don't want to see what happened with the biotech field and the polarization that occured because the scientists and the corporations didn't take the time to include more people in the discussion. -

Re: Pretty cool info
Tue, December 19, 2006 - 10:06 AMExcellent! To me there are two areas of nanotechnology, the use of nano sized structures such as carbon tubes and the construction of actual nano mechanisms. Today work in the field appears to be 99.9% related to the first but I think that 99.9% of the potential of nano technology lies in the second area. -

Re: Pretty cool info
Tue, December 19, 2006 - 11:42 AMI agree totally. Though, I think there is quite a bit being done without publicity in the second.

Re: Pretty cool info
Mon, December 25, 2006 - 10:13 AMya they need to develop the parts of the machine first.... then the two main branches are "the machine" and genetics.

Re: Pretty cool info
Mon, December 25, 2006 - 2:24 PMActually there is a lot of work in both areas, but nano machines are much more difficult to develop and once they are they are patented so you don't hear much about them. There is a projection TV system out on the market that uses nanotech to control an array of micromirrors on a silicon chip.
Of course there is a basic problem - until one has nano-materials to work with how does one make nano-machines?

Re: Pretty cool info
Thu, December 21, 2006 - 8:24 PMI wish there were some technical details in there - because it seems like it would be very difficult to get that kind of improvements when lattice vibrations is a large source of resistance. -
